Triprim is active against most gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Upon intramuscular administration, the active ingredients are rapidly imbibed at the site of injection and rapidly distribute in tissues and organs. A steady concentration of the product in the blood serum is maintained for 18 to 24 hours. Combined action of sulphanilamide and trimethoprim results in double folic acid synthesis blockage in microbial cells. The antimicrobial action is enhanced 6- to 7-fold, and bacteriostatic action resolves itself into bactericidal. This effect results from the different mechanisms of action of the active ingredients. Suphodimethylpyrimidine thwarts the conversion of para-aminobenzoic acid to folic acid, whilst trimethoprim exerts its action at the next stage, the conversion of folic acid to folinic acid, also vital to the microbial cells. |
Triprim is used in the treatment of bacterial infections: respiratory diseases (pneumonia, bronchitis, post-viral pneumonia bacterial infections), urinogenital diseases (nephritis, metritis, cystitis, vaginitis, uteritis), gastrointestinal disorders (colibacteriosis, salmonellosis), mastitis, footrot, septicaemia, wound infections, post-operation and post-birth infections.
Triprim is administered singly via intramuscular route to cattle, sheep, pigs, dogs and cats. The suspension should be shaken before use. If its volume exceeds 20 ml, it should be divided and administered at two separate sites. The site of injection should be massaged. The suggested dose is 15 mg per kg of weight or 1 ml per 10 kg of weight. If necessary, injection may be repeated after 48 hours (36 hours in pigs).
The product is administered intramuscularly, percutaneously, intravenously or intraperitoneally; it should only be administered intravenously to horses.
|
- horses, cattle, pigs and boars: 0.5 ml per 10 kg of weight;
- heifers and fattening pigs: 0.75 ml per 10 kg of weight;
- calves, sheep and piglets: 1 ml per 10 kg of weight;
- cats and dogs: 0.1 ml per 1 kg of weight.
In severe cases, repeated injections should be made for 1 to 4 days.
The withdrawal period is 28 days. Milk from the animals treated with Triprim may be used for food no earlier than 3 days after the last treatment.
