Leptospira interrogans can be detected using PCR. The specific DNA fragment is amplified millions of times, which allows visualization of the results using agarose gel electrophoresis.
Among the advantages of the test system is the capacity to detect the causative agent on the second day after infection. The test system allows differentiation between the pathogenic species of Leptospira and the saprophyte species L. biflexa, non-pathogenic in man and animals.
